The original 1990 film was backed by T-Series and Vishesh Films, with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt directing the film starring Rahul Roy and Anu Agarwal. The franchise was revived in 2013 with Aashiqui 2, directed by Mohit Suri and starring Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur, which was a box office success.

According to Variety, like the second installment, the third installment of the franchise will also be a spiritual successor. Music composer Pritam, who has scored hits with Basu in films like Gangster, Jagga Jasoos, Barfi, Life in a… Metro is all set to score for Aashiqui 3.
Karthik Aaryan, fresh off the success of this year’s Bhool Bhulaiya 2, said headlining a musical love story like Aashiqui 3 was a “dream come true” moment for him as he grew up inspired by the original.
The timeless classic ‘Aashiqui’ is something I grew up watching and working on ‘Aashiqui 3’ is a dream come true. I am honored but grateful to collaborate with Bhushan Kumar and Mukesh Bhatt for this opportunity. I have been a huge fan of Anurag Basu’s work and collaborating with him on this will definitely shape me in many ways,” the actor said in a statement.

Anurag Basu, whose last directorial venture was Ladoo on Netflix, called the Aashiqui franchise an “emotion for fans” that remains in hearts even today. “The aim is to carry forward the legacy in the best possible way. This will be my first venture with Karthik Aaryan, who is known for his hard work, dedication, courage and commitment towards his work and I am really looking forward to it,” he said. Pritam said the Aashiqui franchise is known for its chartbuster soundtrack and he will “take it to the next level” with the third installment. Aashiqui 3 is part of the 100 film slate of the T series.
